Een kort verhaal van Edgar Allan Poe vormt de basis voor deze thriller die zich afspeelt binnen de muren van een psychiatrische instelling in 1899. Dokter Newgate bezoekt een tehuis om ervaring op te doen met de behandeling van geesteszieken. Tijdens zijn verblijf wordt hij verliefd op een patiënte en blijkt er van alles niet pluis in de instelling. Anderson mengt broeierige spanning met een bizar liefdesverhaal en weet de kijker met sfeervolle beelden en verrassende wendingen twee uur lang geboeid te houden.
